Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 15 mins
Total Time: 25 mins
Cuisine: Indian
Serves: 4 servings

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup moong dal (pasi paruppu)
  2. 2 tablespoons oil
  3. 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  4. 1 teaspoon urad dal
  5. 2 green chilies, chopped
  6. 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida
  7. Salt to taste
  8. Fresh coconut, grated (optional)
  9. Coriander leaves, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the moong dal thoroughly under running water until the water runs clear. Drain completely.
  2. Place the rinsed moong dal in a pressure cooker or a deep pan. Add just enough water to cover the dal. Cook until the dal is soft but not mushy, approximately 2-3 whistles in a pressure cooker or 10-12 minutes in an open pan.
  3. Once cooked, drain any excess water and set the cooked moong dal aside. The dal should be tender but still hold its shape.
  4. Heat oil in a large skillet or kadai over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter and crackle.
  5. Add urad dal to the hot oil and sauté until it turns golden brown and gives a nutty aroma.
  6. Add chopped green chilies and sauté for 30 seconds until they release their fragrance.
  7. Sprinkle asafoetida and stir quickly to prevent burning.
  8. Add the cooked moong dal to the tempering and mix gently but thoroughly.
  9. Season with salt to taste and mix well, ensuring even distribution of spices.
  10. If using, add grated fresh coconut and mix gently.
  11. Remove from heat and garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves.
  12. Serve hot as a healthy snack or side dish, preferably warm.

Tips

  1. Rinse Thoroughly: Always rinse the moong dal under running water until the water runs clear. This helps remove any impurities and improves the flavor of your dish.
  2. Cooking Consistency: When cooking the dal, aim for a tender consistency that holds its shape. Avoid overcooking to prevent it from becoming mushy.
  3. Perfect Tempering: Ensure the mustard seeds splutter before adding urad dal. This step enhances the flavor and aroma of the dish.
  4. Spice it Up: Adjust the number of green chilies based on your spice preference. For a milder flavor, you can remove the seeds from the chilies.
  5. Coconut Garnish: Adding fresh grated coconut is optional, but it adds a delightful sweetness and texture. If you love coconut, don’t skip this step!
  6. Serving Suggestions: Enjoy Moong Dal Sundal warm as a healthy snack or as a side dish with your favorite rice or roti. It’s great for gatherings or as a nutritious treat!
