Prep Time: 20 mins
Cook Time: 10 mins
Total Time: 30 mins
Cuisine: Asian
Serves: 24 wontons

Ingredients

  1. 1/2 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined
  2. 1/2 lb crab meat
  3. 1 package wonton wrappers
  4. 1 egg, beaten
  5. 2 green onions, chopped
  6. 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  7. Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the seafood by finely chopping the shrimp and crab meat into small, uniform pieces. Place them in a medium mixing bowl.
  2. Add chopped green onions, soy sauce, salt, and pepper to the seafood mixture. Gently mix the ingredients until well combined, ensuring even distribution of seasonings.
  3. Set up your wonton wrapping station with a clean work surface, wonton wrappers, beaten egg, and a small bowl of water for sealing.
  4. Place a wonton wrapper on the work surface and add approximately 1 teaspoon of the seafood mixture in the center of the wrapper.
  5. Dip your finger in the water and moisten the edges of the wonton wrapper to help create a secure seal.
  6. Fold the wrapper diagonally to create a triangle, pressing the edges firmly to remove air and seal the filling inside.
  7. Take the two bottom corners of the triangle and bring them together, using a small amount of beaten egg to help them stick. This creates the classic wonton shape.
  8. Repeat the wrapping process with remaining wrappers and filling, placing completed wontons on a lightly floured surface to prevent sticking.
  9. Prepare a large pot of water or steamer with boiling water. If boiling, ensure water is at a gentle rolling boil.
  10. Carefully place wontons in the boiling water or steamer, cooking for 4-5 minutes until the wrappers become translucent and the filling is cooked through.
  11. Remove wontons with a slotted spoon and drain excess water. Serve hot with your preferred dipping sauce, such as soy sauce or sweet chili sauce.

Tips

  1. Chop your seafood finely and evenly to ensure consistent cooking and a smooth filling texture.
  2. Keep your wonton wrappers covered with a damp towel to prevent them from drying out while you're working.
  3. Don't overfill the wontons – a teaspoon of filling is usually perfect to prevent splitting during cooking.
  4. Use cold water when sealing wontons to help the edges stick together more effectively.
  5. If you're not cooking the wontons immediately, place them on a lightly floured baking sheet and cover with plastic wrap to prevent sticking.
  6. For extra flavor, consider adding a small amount of minced ginger or garlic to your seafood mixture.
  7. Experiment with different dipping sauces like ponzu, sweet chili, or a homemade sesame-soy blend to complement the wontons.
  8. If you're new to wonton folding, practice makes perfect – don't get discouraged if the first few aren't picture-perfect!
